Sporting vs Olympiakos by Isaiah
After the international break, players of Sporting continued with their duties in Taca de Portugal which probably fits them good since it was an easier game against Segunda Liga side Famalcao at home, game that they have won with a 2:0 result.
Both goals came in the second halftime when the hosts increased the tempo, via Coates in 65th minute and Dost in 81st, while there was no doubt which side looked better on the field however guests missed a penalty kick during the additional time. With this victory they have progressed to the last sixteen phase, hoping that they can keep the positive momentum for tonight's game as well since they need a victory badly in order to remain in the battle for the knockout stage of Champions League.
Sporting is set to play in 4-2-3-1 formation with Dost as central striker, but also with Cesare, Podence and Martins as offensive midfielders. Central defender Jeremy Mathieu (10/1) is injured, as well as left back Jonathan Silva (6/0). Central back Sebastian Coates (11/1) is suspended for this clash, while the hosts have offensive midfielder Marcos Acuna set as doubtful for this one. Performance of right back Cristiano Piccini is also under question at the moment.
Olympiakos, on the other side, continues having difficulties in the domestic league, but at least now the side has two consecutive victories, coming from a 2:1 three pointer taken in front of own fans against Levadiakos last Saturday afternoon.
The game itself was very open one and more open than what the final result shows, with the visiting side having really plenty of chances, as the players of Olympiakos once again showed that they need improvement in the defensive lineup. Still, they took the lead via Gillet in 43rd minute, have missed the penalty at the start of second and even though the guests leveled up in 68th minute via Giakoumakis, they were unable to resist till the end and have conceded the second goal in 85th minute via Koutris. Olympiakos now stands at third position together with Atromitos, having just a point less than leading duo from AEK and PAOK. No doubt that this is their last try to get back into the race for the third position at least, but the side surely slowly turns their attention more to the domestic league.
Guests should be playing in a version of 4-1-4-1 formation with Fortounis as central striker, plus Figueiras, Odjidja-Ofoe, Romao and Carcela-Gonzalez as offensive midfielders. They have no fresh injury worries ahead of this game and will probably stick to the very similar squad that managed to stay undefeated last time out against Barcelona.
Sporting is in a must win situation since the side needs to stay in touch with second placed Juventus that has three points more than them and this is now the best chance they will get since the Italian team plays against group leaders from Barcelona. The Greek side has very little to lose here as they need unlikely development of situation and at first, a victory here in order to stay alive in the competition for the third position at all. I see the game being quite an open one, but with the Portuguese side prevailing in the end - they alone as able to score three here.
Preston vs Bolton
International break came in a really good momentum for the players of Preston, who came from fourth consecutive defeat two weeks ago when the side visited Ipswich and stood defeated with a 3:0 result, without being specially threatening in attack even though they had far more ball possession during all ninety minutes.
They had initiative in the first halftime, but conceded a goal in additional time via Waghorn, opening the second halftime also with a goal conceded, in 49th minute via McGoldrick, remaining with more of the ball possession, but it simply wasn't their day since they conceded once again in 64th minute with a goal from Celina, staying without much desire to concretely attack in a match where they lost the ground obviously. The side is now at 14h position with still just five points less than play-off placed sides and the target would be to get back to these positions as soon as possible, surely counting on a three pointer here.
Hosts should be playing in 4-2-3-1 formation with Hugill as central striker, plus Maguire, Harrop and Barkhuizen as offensive midfielders. Defenders Tommy Spurr and Tom Clarke are long term absentees without anyway performing till now in the season, while left back Greg Cunningham (3/0) also remains out and injured for this one.
Bolton, on the other side, is in a completely different momentum than their opponents coming now from fifth consecutive game where they didn't suffer defeat (two victories and three draws), winning at home over Norwich 2:1 in the most recent Championship game.
Players of Norwich looked better and had a bit of meaningless initiative in the first halftime, but conceded two goals towards the end of the first half, via Madine in 35th and Armstong in 40th, just to have even bigger initiative in the second halftime, but couldn't do much except deficit reduce in third minute of additional time via Murphy. The side is fine form looking at results, but there's no doubt that they were quite lucky in most of these games usually with their opponents having much more of the initiative during the match. After a run of five undefeated matches, they still remain second from the bottom, but now with just two points less than safely placed Burton.
Guests are set to play in 4-2-3-1 formation with Madine as central striker, but also with Ameobi, Vela and Armstrong as offensive support behind him. Defensive midfielder Jem Karacan (10/0) and left full back Andrew Taylor (10/0) are both doubtful for this one. They shouldn't change much in comparison to previous match. Injured and also out should be defender Reece Burke (9/0), midfielder Filipe Morais (12/1) and forwards Aaron Wibraham (7/0) and Adam Le Fondre (13/1).
- Bolton have kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 6 matches against Preston.
Preston were in a really poor momentum before the international break came, as the team had four consecutive defeats and six matches without a victory. However, now with a bit of a break, they are welcoming one of the best possible opponents in the moment as the team faces up against Bolton, surely one of less quality sides in the league. Away from home, I don't see players of Bolton remaining competitive for a very long time here with the home side now being really in a must win situation.
Pro Vercelli vs Empoli
After four could be said negative results as the players of Pro Vercelli has two defeats and two draws, the team managed to improve and surprise most of their fans with narrow 1:0 victory on the road against Novara last weekend. The game itself wasn't very attacking one, with the players of Novara having more of the ball possession, but their visitors looked way more concrete with the ball in their feet.
They were already slightly better in the first halftime, but continued to be more concrete in second as well, taking the lead in 56th minute with a goal from Morra and standing well in the defense without much of problems getting the victory they needed so much. Of course, atmosphere inside the locker room has improved, as they recoreded third victory in the season being now at nineteenth position, having just a point less than safely placed sides and surely that a victory remains their target for this one now.
Hosts are set to miss defender Germano (9/0), but also midfielders Jidayi (3/0), Bifulco (11/1) and forwards Rovini (6/1), Vajushi (8/0) and Vivas who anyway didn't play so far.
Empoli, on the other side, comes from second consecutive game without a victory, as they firstly suffered 2:1 loss away from home against Salernitana in a game where they were slight favorites, but then also made a setback in front of own fans taking just a point in a 1:1 draw against Spezia last weekend and being strong favorites before the match. However, must be said that they were quite a better side from the first minute, but failed to score a goal.
They continued being better in the second part as well, but the visitors were the first ones to score a goal, which happened in 52nd minute via Mastinu, with the players of Empoli attacking quite a lot in the continuation of the match, but all they got was to level up the result in 78th minute via Pasqual, without being able to completely revert the scoreline. The side now dropped to fourth position at the table but are still just two points behind leaders from Frosinone and surely enter this one in order to improve the atmosphere and get so much wanted victory finally.
Guests are set to miss defenders Simic (8/3) and Veseli (10/0) but also midfielder Bennacer (12/0), all three being out with a national selection duty. Suspended is midfielder Castagnetti (13/0), while injured remain defender Pejovic and forward Mchedlidze (both without playing so far anyway).
- Pro Vercelli didn't win in last three home matches.
Pro Vercelli is coming here with improved morale and will be looking for their chance in front of own fans, also being known for playing way more open and attacking football at home ground. Empoli remains a favorite here, but my first betting choice will be going with goals since both teams work way better in attack than the reliability they show in defense. Guests should appear attacking as well, wanting badly to get back to the positions that lead directly to Serie A.
